California disability advocates to rally in Sacramento May 27

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -– Over 2000 people with disabilities will be at the Capitol for the 6th Annual Disability Capitol Action Day, which is taking place May 27, 2009 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The theme of this year’s event is based on the 1999 U.S. Supreme Court Olmstead Decision which requires all states, including California, to implement an Olmstead plan that provides services which allow people with disabilities the choice of living in the community as opposed to institutions.

Despite this, the state continues to make cuts to vital programs like In Home Support Services, Supplemental Security Income, Medi-Cal Optional Benefits, etc that allow people with disabilities to live independently in the community. It’s been 10 years since the Olmstead Decision.

Disability Capitol Action Day Agenda

· 10:00 AM – March to the Capitol from US Bank Building on 6th St.

· 11:00 AM – Educational Rally & Entertainment on the west steps of the Capitol

· 12:30 PM – Lunch

· 1:30 – 3:30 PM – Legislative Visits

The Disability Action Coalition includes organizations from across the state that represents and supports independent living, equality and disability civil rights.
