Youth group in West Virginia provides support for young people with autism

From WTRF-TV in West Virginia:

WHEELING. W. Va. -- A group of kids have in the Ohio Valley have something in common; they either have autism or Asperger's syndrome.

Autism is when someone shows difficulty in social and communication interaction along with some unusual behaviors. Most of the kids have Asperger's which is a higher functioning form of autism. They have an easier time talking and interacting with others.

As 7 News continues their special report called "7 Angels", the focus Tuesday night was on a woman who put a group together. Her name is Anita Boston.

Boston's son has Asperger's and she tried to find groups for him, but there was nothing out there. That's why she started her own group called "The Wheeling Autism Youth Group."

In the end, 18 children ranging from 8 to 21 years-old showed interest.

It's a group where they can get together and be themselves. Amy Wilson has children who are in the group and she's happy there's something out there for her kids.

The participants enjoy the activities they do together such as movies and small trips.

A lot of the kids feel very excepted in the group.

"If anybody has autism or Asperger's or something like that, you should really come by here it's really great, it's really informal, you get to hang out, it's just tons of fun." Dylan Boston said.
