Canadian father who killed his daughter with CP continues to receive day parole

From Ottawa Citizen:

SASKATOON, Canada — Robert Latimer (pictured), the Wilkie-area farmer given a life sentence for the mercy killing of his daughter, will continue serving day parole.

On March 12, the National Parole Board voted to extend Latimer’s day parole, which he has served since being released from a federal penitentiary in March 2008.

Latimer first served at a halfway house in Ottawa and then in Victoria, where he is training as an electrician. He is considered a minimum security risk.

The only stipulation on his release is that he is not to be responsible for any severely disabled individuals. In 1993, Latimer killed his 12-year-old daughter, Tracy, who suffered from severe cerebral palsy and had little chance of recovery.

Since July 2008, Latimer has been allowed monthly unescorted visits to Saskatchewan.

He will be eligible to apply for full parole in December 2010.
