LUCERNE, Switzerland -- Oscar Pistorius ran a personal best for the season in the 400 meters, yet missed by more than a second a chance to qualify for the world championships.
The 22-year-old double-amputee sprinter clocked 47.07 seconds in finishing runner-up in his heat Wednesday. It was 0.13 seconds faster than his performance last month in Torino, Italy.
Pistorius has one more chance Saturday at Velletri, Italy, to achieve the 45.95 he needs to earn a place on the South Africa team at the Aug. 15-23 world championships in Berlin.
He has struggled to reach the qualifying mark after fracturing ribs in a boating accident in February near Johannesburg, South Africa.
Pistorius runs on artificial blades attached to his lower legs.
