EAST LANSING, Mich. - Researchers are studying blood samples routinely taken from Michigan newborns for 23 years in the hunt for the causes of cerebral palsy.
A $1.9 million federal recovery grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke is financing the two-year study.
Lead researcher Nigel Paneth says experts know too little about prenatal causes of cerebral palsy, commonly blamed on birth trauma.
The Michigan State University scientist says the study will examine the role of thyroid hormone levels, infection and blood clotting in cerebral palsy.
The universities of Minnesota and Michigan also are participating, along with the Helen DeVos Children's and Mary Free Bed hospitals in Grand Rapids.
