Haitian Amputee Soccer Team sports their new skills in Arizona

MESA, Ariz. - A soccer team visiting the Valley is hoping to inspire others, despite having to overcome tremendous tragedy in their own lives.

The Haitian Amputee Soccer Team will participate in several activities over the next several days. The team was formed after the January earthquake with the help of the International Institute of Sports and Phoenix Pro Soccer.

“None of these guys were professional soccer players before,” said Dr. Fred Sorrells with the IIS. “But when you watch them play it is like they’ve been playing all their lives.”

The team recently competed in the Amputee Soccer World Cup in Argentina.

“I thought my life was over,” said Francois Makewdy a player on the team who lost his leg in the earthquake. “This gives me and my family the feeling that there is something out there for us that is good.”
