A man with Down syndrome has been awarded more than $7 million in compensation for injuries he suffered when hit by a car 13 years ago.
Michael Aaron James was knocked off his bike by a car in the West Australian city of Bunbury in 1997.
The 28-year-old's family took legal action and now the District Court has awarded him $7.4 million.
In his decision, Judge Robert Mazza said before the accident Mr James had no real health problems and his family hoped he would be able to work and live independently.
However he now requires around-the-clock care, including oxygen.
He also has epileptic fits and is at constant risk of choking.
Mr James has been given compensation for a range of expenses including medical costs, carers and modifications to the family's house.
The James family was contacted by the ABC but declined to comment.
