JACKSON, Miss. -- It’s illegal in Mississippi to park in a handicapped parking space without the placard or license, but that apparently didn’t stop one Jackson Police Department officer.
A 16 WAPT News crew spotted the vehicle, which was parked on South Congress Street across from JPD Headquarters, Thursday at about 9:30 a.m. The vehicle had already been ticketed twice.
Every morning in downtown Jackson, Officer Edwards makes her rounds. It's her job to ticket cars parked by expired or handicapped meters.
She said the JPD vehicles are repeat offenders.
"A lot of (police) park here, but they're not supposed to," Edwards said. "They're not supposed to park in these handicaps."
Edwards said she issued the tickets on Thursday at 8:50 a.m. -- one for an expired meter and the other for parking in a handicapped spot, which carried a $200 fine.
After learning of the illegally parked JPD vehicle, Assistant Chief Lee Vance said it’s his department’s job to hold officers accountable when they do something wrong.
“We don't condone that," Vance said. "We'll find out who it is and we'll handle it accordingly. It will be dealt with quickly.”
Vance said there is no waiving of tickets for JPD officers.
The police SUV vehicle was parked there until at least 11 a.m.
