JACKSON, Miss. -- A group of wheelchair bound football fans say they were forced to push themselves several blocks, when they were prevented from parking near Veterans Memorial Stadium (pictured) Oct. 16.
They were trying to attend the Jackson State-Southern football game, which had a record crowd.
Lamar Meyers of the Mississippi Paralysis Association and his friends say security around the stadium would not allow them to park in the handicapped spaces.
They say they were told they didn't have the right handicapped stickers on their vehicles, and had to park several blocks away.
Meyers says security also prevented a group of patients from the Methodist Rehab Specialty Care from being dropped off at the stadium gates.
"At no other stadium in this state do we get hassled so bad. We go to Ole Miss, Southern in Hattiesburg, Mississippi State, all of those are accommodating to us but when you get here you hear you should have got here early, it's not our fault," says Meyers.
The Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration tells WLBT News they contract out security for games and that their policy is only to let people in who have a state issued handicapped sticker, or license plate.
Monday spokeswoman Kim Wiggins said this should never have happened and they will make sure their security has a better understanding of who is allowed in the parking lot, for future games.
