Indian town makes voting more accessible

CHANDIGARH, India -- The poll officials in Karnal have erected ramps in the polling booths to enable handicapped voters to reach the electronic voting machine to cast their votes.

District Election Officer Chander Prakash said that special attention has been paid to facilitate the handicapped persons and blinds for casting their votes for the Lok Sabha elections scheduled on May 7 in Haryana.

He informed that blind persons would be allowed the company of a person above the age of 18 years with them in the polling booth but the accompanied person will have to keep the voting confidential.

Furthermore, the person assisting the blind person would have to sign a declaration that he has not accompanied another blind person on that day of voting.

He will have to present this declaration to the polling centre officer. A copy of the said declaration would be available at the polling booth.

Besides the blind persons, other physically-challenged persons, who would be in a
position to press the button, will also be allowed to be assisted by another
person.

However, no one else would be allowed to bring a person along with him for assistance.
