ACCRA, Ghana -- Rotary International announced on August 11 in Accra that it would redouble effort to eliminate polio in West Africa and Asia in particular.
It said under its Polio Initiative Campaign, the club besides, focusing more attention on West Africa and Asia, it has voted resources to help immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries across the globe.
Mr Simon Sibri Kafando, District Governor of Rotary International said this at a joint meeting in Accra between the Rotary Club of Accra North and Accra Ring Road Central.
Mr Kafando, who is resident in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, is in Ghana to visit all Rotary clubs in the country and share felicitations as well as remind them of the core values of the club.
He said since the launch of the Polio Initiative, huge progress had been achieved in curbing the disease, but added that more needed to be done because polio still endangered lives of children.
He said the club was also embarking on projects such as malaria elimination, provision of potable water, fighting hunger and adult literacy programmes for especially women to empower the vulnerable and less-privileged in society.
Mr Kafando reminded members of the spirit of Rotary, which was to make the interest of the less-privileged paramount and work towards it realization before their own personal interest.
He also called on members to work to promote the image of the club and thereby increase its membership in the country.
