Ghana's disabled people ask for a ceasefire in Bawku

Physically disabled persons in the Bawku Municipality are enraged over the barbaric attacks on its members in the Bawku clashes and have called on government to ensure a complete halt in the protracted violence.

Needless clashes between the Kussasis and the Mamprusis have left dozens dead and properties destroyed, and the disabled persons say they are worst affected.

President of the Ghana Association of the Blind, Yaw Debrah, at a press conference on Thursday said government must call the feuding factions to order.

According to him, one of their members in a wheelchair was burnt to ashes when his house was set ablaze in one of the clashes.

“On that fateful day, we learnt that about 15 houses were set ablaze and a physically disabled person who was a wheel chair user could not be helped by their relatives to flee and was burnt to ashes.

“In the same circumstances a blind person, a well known lab technician in the Bawku Hospital had his six room apartment razed to the ground by a blazing fire.

“Another person with disability had his house riddled with bullet,” he narrated.

In spite of these difficulties, Mr Debrah noted shops belonging to disabled persons were looted leaving the affected persons with no means of livelihood.
