Five Philadelphia students now have a little more help with their college educations, thanks to the Mayor's Commission on People with Disabilities.

"The first person I want to call is Carmen Hunter Anderson..."

At a City Hall ceremony on Jan. 14, mayor Michael Nutter handed out five $1,000 scholarships to disabled students who were heading on to college or trade school. The scholarships were funded with private donations.

Assistant deputy mayor Roger Margulies says all of the students are driven to become productive members of society:

"A lot of people without disabilities have all kinds of assumptions and stereotypes, and believe that people with disabilities don't have much to offer. And boy, are they wrong!"

Margulies says scholarship recipients not only have to have good grades, but they must be able to demonstrate how they plan to be an advocate for the disabled in the future.
