Wales town raises curbs at bus stops for better wheelchair access

Rhondda, Wales, is raising the kerbs at 60 bus stops and introducing more lower-floor buses in a £395,000 scheme to help disabled passengers.

The works, due for completion in February 2010, cover a large area of the Cynon Valley from Hirwaun to Aberaman and Cwmaman.

There will also be 30 new bus shelters.

Cllr Andrew Morgan, Cabinet Member for Transport and Customer Care, explained: “This is a massive, widespread refurbishment scheme which will benefit the many thousands of regular passengers who use public transport to and from the Cynon Valley area.

“The introduction of higher kerb levels and the usage of more lower-floor buses allows far easier access to wheelchair users and passengers who suffer from all types of mobility problems.

“We welcome the investment being made by the Heads of the Valley’s HARPs programme and look forward to seeing how this work will benefit so many residents and visitors to this part of Rhondda Cynon Taf.”
