Michigan caregiver gets prison term for neglect of woman with MS

From The Muskegon Chronicle in Mich.:

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — The caregiver of a multiple sclerosis patient who investigators say died as a result of neglect will serve 2 1/2 to 15 years in prison.

William John Masselink was sentenced by Ottawa County Circuit Judge Edward Post Monday. The 45-year-old Grand Haven man pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and second-degree vulnerable adult abuse last month.

Masselink lived with and took care of 34-year-old Amber Carey, who had suffered from MS for 12 years and could not walk or care for herself.

Carey died Feb. 23 from infected bedsores. Family members first became aware of signs of neglect in late 2009, when a visiting nurse notified authorities Carey wasn’t being properly cared for at her Grand Haven apartment.
