NC mother says restaurant banning of "screaming children" discriminatory toward kids with autism

CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. -– There's a restaurant in Carolina Beach that has signs on its door that read, "Screaming children will not be tolerated."

At least one customer is taking the warning to heart and says her child would not be allowed in the establishment because some of his symptoms include screaming.

About three weeks ago, Kelly Chambliss confronted Brenda Armes, the owner of Olde Salty's, about the signs which she thought was a joke.

According to Armes, Chambliss accused her of singling out autistic children, but can't understand why she is offended by the signs.

"And I said, ‘Autism is not a word on that sign ma'am,'" said Armes.

Chambliss was not with her autistic son when she confronted Armes, but claims the owner made it very clear that her son was not welcome in the restaurant.

"She looked at me and said, ‘I cannot believe you even take him in public. You must be the only one that does,'" said Chambliss.

She believes that having the "No Screaming Children" signs on the door is illegal and violates the American with Disabilities Act.

"I really think she needs to meet some of these kids, and I think she needs to see that they are awesome," said Chambliss. "Please don't shut them out because they don't fit in the perfect box everyone wants them in."

Armes said no one will be kicked out of Olde Salty's, they will only be asked to step outside until their child calms down.
