In India, disability awareness campaign begins

IMPHAL, India -- As in other parts of the country, an eight-day campaign on creating awareness on the plight of individuals living with disability has been flagged-off by the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh.

The campaign launch held at BOAT Nov. 19 was also attended by Yaiskul AC MLA Elangbam Suraj and Deputy Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly Th Lokeshore as the president and guest of honour respectively.

In his address as the chief guest of the campaign called 'Badhte Kadam 11', which will be conducted under the aegis of Spastic Society of Manipur, the Chief Minister reminded that every individual irrespective of their physical status have the right to live a respectable life.

Stating that it is the duty of every citizen to ensure well-being of persons with disabilities, O Ibobi said there is no guarantee that a normal person will remain as one for a slightest error or unfortunate incident may maim an individual.

He expressed confidence that initiative of the Spastic Society of Manipur will bear fruit in spreading the message of love and care for persons with disabilities.

The CM further pledged that all possible assistance would be extended to disabled persons and sought support from all concerned in the preparation of welfare while programmes.

As a part of the campaign launch one physically challenged Joykumar exhibited his skills with the hands alone.

Joykumar is said to have won a bronze medal in arm wrestling.
