Harrisburg, Pa. -- Governor Rendell signed a bill into law that will require private health insurers to cover necessary treatments for autistic people up to age 21.
That includes physical, psychological and behavioral services among others. Insurers will be responsible for the cost of treatment up to $36,000 per year.
Governor Rendell said it will lessen the reliance on government-funded services and help struggling families.
"It's wonderful for us to be here putting Pennsylvania in the forefront of autism treatment," he said.
Currently, many private health insurers restrict coverage for certain services for autistic people.
