EUCLID, Ohio -- Geneva Mabrey, 71, of Euclid, Ohio, was sentenced to two years of probation for submerging a 5-year-old boy in cold water.
Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Michael Russo also ordered her to forfeit her nursing license.
The licensed practical nurse faced up to eight years in prison for the near drowning of the boy, who has mental retardation.
Mabrey, of East 260th Street, called 9-1-1 about 10 p.m. April 23, 2008, and said the boy had slipped under the bath water. When paramedics arrived, the boy's body temperature was 85 degrees.
The child was taken to Euclid Hospital then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where he stayed for five days. The boy recovered and is living with his grandmother in Columbus, Assistant Prosecutor Jesse Canonico said.
The boy's mother was in prison and his father was wanted in Lake County when the near-drowning occurred, prosecutor's spokesman Ryan Miday said.
Russo decided the case, dropping a felonious assault charge and finding her guilty of child endangering.
