PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Governor Donald Carcieri joined local dignitaries, students, teachers, and parents for a ribbon cutting for the new Rhode Island School for the Deaf.
Construction began on the green project back in 2008. The school is expected to qualify for Silver Certification under the US Green Building Council’s LEED for Schools rating system.
Students ranging from preschool - 12th grade attend the school which now has 23 classrooms, two science labs, and a newly renovated gymnasium and locker rooms.
“The Rhode Island School for the Deaf has long enjoyed a tradition of excellence, and today we start a new chapter for the School,” said Governor Donald Carcieri.
Lena Greene, a former graduate and current teacher at the School for the Deaf said, "It is amazing to see how much better visual learners are adapting to the state of the art technology, like SmartBoards and the new communication system.
