The latest in anti-R-word fashion

The protests against the film "Tropic Thunder" have spawned some pretty cool fashion statements, or rather fashion with important statements. Protesters from disability organizations at the film premiere wore T-shirts with a large R with a slash through it over the phrase "Tropic Blunder."

According to the Patricia E. Bauer blog, the CafePress is now selling T-shirts that say "Never go full Stiller," a play on the offensive phrase in the film, which said, "Never go full retard."

And a couple in Oklahoma are selling the two items pictured at the top from their "Stop saying retard" blog, which appears to have been launched in 2007. Rick and Wanda Felty of Norman, Okla., say their "'R' Word Campaign is a grass roots effort to educate and inform the public that the use of the word 'retard' or 'retarded' to mean a bad thing is wrong. Not only because it perpetuates prejudice and discrimination towards people with disabilities, but simply because when it's used in an ugly way, it hurts individuals and families of those with disabilities. This site is an effort to help individuals and families of those with disabilities by letting them know its OKAY to speak out when you hear the 'R' Word. Together we can make a difference."

Finally, the "Tropic Blunder" protest is now getting international coverage. The Herald Sun in Australia has a story and photo slide show on its Web page August 12.
