Toddler with CP found abandoned in India

A two-and-a-half-year-old girl is fighting for her life alone in a Noida hospital. She was abandoned by her family, possibly because she has cerebral palsy.

Now, the worry is that will this toddler survive her extreme malnutrition? And if she recovers, can Delhi find her a home where she will be loved and looked after?

In 42-degree heat, the girl was lying under the bushes. Workers at the metro construction site in Noida's Sector 14 found her and took her to the police, who asked an NGO to help out.

Doctors say it's clear that she had not eaten anything for two days.

"The immediate challenge is her survival and we are focused on that. Further challenge would be that she catches her growth in a couple of months and we get to know what exactly is her mental status. Correction of malnutrition and protein deficiency will take a lot of time," said Dr Narendra Gupta of Satya Medical Centre.

Her CT scan report suggests that the child is suffering from Cerebral Palsy, a chronic disorder along with severe malnutrition.

The two and a half year old, at least eight kg underweight, she is too weak to even share her name, so the nurses looking after her just call her baby.

"Once she is better and if we can find her parents, she will go home. If not, we'll put her up for adoption and follow all the processes. If nobody wants to adopt her, she'll be sent to an orphanage," said Ashok Kumar Tripathi, SP City, Noida.

Not yet three years old, and already alone, what the baby needs is a loving home that can afford expensive and continued medical attention.
