New documentary focuses on athlete's change of life to serving others with disabilities

The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, Calif., has a story about a documentary by Patricia Thio, who expanded a USC class project into a short documentary about Willie Stewart (right).

"He was a star football and rugby player, a high school wrestler who was 54-0 in matches and was two weeks away from starting school at the University of Maryland on an athletic scholarship in 1980 when a roofing accident atop the Watergate building in Washington, D.C., ripped the flesh and muscle from much of his left arm and tore off his hand," The Press-Enterprise writes. Thio's 20-minute film, "Armed for the Challenge," focuses on "Stewart's journey from depression, anger and rehabilitation to a career helping the disabled and his return to athletics."

The film will be shown at the 14th annual Temecula Valley International Film and Music Festival, which began its five-day run Sept. 16. You can watch a trailer of the documentary on the Press-Enterprise Web site.
