BEACON, N.Y. - Mentally ill inmates at a New York prison are part of a pioneering study that aims to determine whether educating them about their conditions can help reduce discipline problems and recidivism.
About 140 inmates have received the training at Fishkill Correctional Facility in Beacon, about 70 miles north of New York City.
They took a 40-hour, 20-week course on identifying stressors, coping tools and how medication can help. A private foundation financed the program.
Participants will be compared to another group of inmates to gauge the program's impact. Officials say that will mark the first study of its kind in the United States.
Officials say about 8,000 inmates statewide are being treated for mental illness.
