With end of bus service, disabled people in Alabama town left without a ride

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Bus service in Hoover ends in a little less than two weeks and some people will be left without any way to get around.

Leticia Waldon has been riding the Max Paratransit bus since 1999.

She has muscular dystrophy and uses the bus to go to work, shopping and doctor appointments.

Starting November first, she’ll be left without a ride.

Hoover city leaders voted to stop paying for bus service because of a billing dispute with the BJCTA and tight city coffers.

“How am I going to get to work every day,” Waldon wondered aloud Tuesday. How am I going to do the things people take for granted, ,like going to the grocery store, picking up prescriptions, visiting friends and family? Even if I want to see a movie, how was I going to do that?”

Bus service is also being scaled back in Vestavia Hills in coming weeks.
