Abused baby with Down syndrome turned over to state in Malaysia

From Bernama in Malaysia:

KUANTAN -- The baby girl being treated in hospital, believed to have been abuse by her parents, will be handed over to the Welfare Services Department (JKM).

Kuantan CID chief DSP Kamaruzzaman Jaafar said arrangement was being made to transfer the seven-month old baby girl with Down's Syndrome from Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.

He said the baby girl being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since two days ago was in stable condition and hoped that she would recover from the injuries.

Newspaper reports said that the baby girl sustained cerebral and subconjunctival haemorrhage, epilepsy and bruises, believed due to abuse by her parents at their Lorong Perdana, Bukit Setongkol home since a few weeks ago.

The parents aged 20 and 19 years respectively told doctors at the hospital that the injuries were sustained in a fall.

Kamaruzzaman said police were still investigating the parents who had been remanded one week before a decision was made whether to prosecute them or not.
