NY man sentenced to 122 years for rape of wheelchair user

From WKTV in N.Y.:

UTICA, N.Y. -- A Rome man has been sentenced to more than a century behind bars for raping a woman in a wheelchair.

Jurors took just a little over an hour in June to convict Rondula Lane, 37, of several crimes, including sexual abuse, burglary and several counts of criminal sexual act.

The jury didn't believe Lane's story that a 56-year old woman who suffers scoliosis, can't stand upright and is in a wheelchair made sexual advances toward "him" when he entered her home early New Year's Day.

Lane told the jury that he was looking through the victim's apartment window at roughly 4 a.m. on New Year's Day when he spotted her lying on the ground inside. The victim told the jury that she had fallen to the floor after reaching for something and losing her balance, and quickly found Lane inside her apartment and forcing her to have sex with him.

Lane tried to convince the jury that he was only helping the victim up, but the woman, through tears on the witness stand, said Lane claimed to have a knife and "could chop her to pieces."

Lane was sentenced to a total of 122 years in prison for his crimes.
