Ohio woman charged with stealing from 11 disabled people who live at group homes she manages

DAYTON, Ohio — An Englewood woman was indicted Sept. 30 on charges that she stole money from 11 disabled people that lived at the group homes she managed.

Loren F. Moyer is charged with one count of theft of more than $25,000 from an elderly or disabled person, which is a second-degree felony punishable by up to eight years in state prison, and one misdemeanor count of tampering with records.

Moyer, 30, of Englewood, uses several last names, including Thompson and Prince, said Montgomery County Prosecutor Mathias H. Heck, Jr. He said she took about $40,000 from the victims between February 2006 through July 27, 2009.

“The defendant certainly abused her position of trust,” Heck said.

Under the indictment, Moyer is ordered to appear for an arraignment on Oct. 14.

Moyer managed a number of group homes owned by Graceworks Lutheran Services. She would transfer money from the victims’ bank accounts, file false receipts and write bogus checks, said assistant county prosecutor Sarah Schenck, who oversees the office’s fraud and economic crimes unit.

Graceworks receives social security checks from the government, takes out money for expenses, then deposits the rest to the residents’ accounts, Schenck said.

The crimes were discovered through routine audits done by Graceworks, Heck said.
