Bangladesh eyes disability rights law

DHAKA, Bangladesh -- Speakers at a view-exchange meeting here on August 20 underscored the need for framing a time befitting and realistic law for protecting the rights of the disabled people.

Terming the disabled persons as the integral part of the society, they said time has come to involve them with the mainstream of the society for overall development of the nation.

Ministry for Social Welfare, Parliamentarian Caucus on Disability and Jatiyo Protibandhi Forum jointly organized the function on the draft law of protecting the rights of the disabled people at Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies auditorium.

Secretary of Social Welfare Ministry Kamrun Nessa Khanom chaired the function while Parliamentarian Caucus on Disability Chairperson and former Law Minister Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru, MP, Advocate Mir Showkat Ali, MP, Barrister Amirul Islam, Professor Dr Shubhagato Roy and Barrister Tania Ameer, among others, addressed the meeting.

They underlined the need for establishing a sound atmosphere for the disabled persons to ensure a dignified position for them in society.

Referring to the government various effective steps for the welfare of the disabled persons in the country, they said all concerned in different spheres of the administration should make the best use of all facilities in the greater interest of these people.

They urged all concerned to give their opinions to make the law for the disabled people for next 3 to 4 months.

They also urged the affluent section of the society as well as the media to come forward with their helping hands to supplement the government's efforts to properly place the disadvantaged people in the society.
