Helen Keller, left, with Annie Sullivan
CNN reports May 3 that some local Alabama residents are upset about two highway billboards advertising Helen Keller's birthplace in Tuscumbia, Alabama. The billboards promotes the highway exit for Keller's birthplace and have a picture of Keller with the statement "See What She Couldn't."
Several residents worried that it is offensive or might be seen as a joke about one of Alabama's most-famous historic figures. Another resident had a positive comment, calling it "insightful" and saying that Keller was an intelligent woman who wouldn't have had a problem with the billboard.
The report says that the Keller birthplace draws more than 60,000 tourists annually to that part of Alabama. Each June Tuscumbia hosts the Helen Keller Festival.
